Where are you from?
South Africa
What is your interest in The Future is On the Table?
With the help of other artists I have assembled a group of around 30 youths in Capetown, South Africa and teach them sculpture, the art through which they will develop self-sufficiency and individual skills in a country where there are very few jobs. Their present artwork is a sculpture made out of Spring stone. It is called The Big Five, (education of the senses). The Future is on the Table project is their link to the art world.

"Our participation in 'Capturing the Moving Mind' and 'The Future is on the Table' is a great achievement to all of us here, there are really no words enough to describe the high moral we have in our group at present moment. On top of everything we are very happy to be interacting with other Artists the world over. We are all of the belief that if some are making it in the Art industry so why cant we also. We also would like one of our members to represent us. Our number is also growing since our participation, which is also a good achievement."

"The name of our association is called MAYIBUYE ARTS AND CULTURE. MAYIBUYE when translated in English means LET’S COME TOGETHER.
Other artists I am working with are:
MARTHA NHAMO, PAINTER
VUYO NOCEZO, PAINTER, SCULPTOR
RAPHAEL MAVUDZI, SCULPTOR
LEROY KUMALO, WIRE ART
GEORGE GODLO, TRADITIONAL DANCING
CLAUDE MAREDZA, MUSIC AND POET"

The Big Five

"THESE DAYS IT SEEMS LIKE IT’S A PRIVILEGE MORE THAN A RIGHT FOR SOME OF US TO HAVE CLEAN WATER AND DECENT SHELTER, SO WE WANT TO MAKE SURE EVERYBODY EXERCISES HIS/HER RIGHTS TO CLEAN WATER AND DECENT SHELTER.
WE ARE TRYING TO FIGHT POVERTY BY TRAINING THE YOUTH ON HOW TO USE THEIR COMMON SENSES. WE HAVE SEEN THAT THERE ARE A LOT OF YOUTH WHO ARE LOSING THEIR SENSES EASILY. THEY ARE WANDERING THE STREETS AIMLESSLY, SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY CAN'T FIND ANYTHING TO DO. THEY DON'T HAVE A JOB, BUT WHAT THEY DON'T KNOW IS THAT WORKING DOESN'T MEAN BEING AT A COMPANY AND WAITING FOR MONTHLY WAGES. SO WE ARE TRYING TO RESTORE THEIR SENSES BACK TOGETHER AND NOT TO LOSE ANY ONE OF THEM, BECAUSE EACH AND EVERY SENSE IS VERY IMPORTANT IN OUR EVERYDAY LIVING. WE ARE ALSO TEACHING THEM TO BE STRONG AND TO BE PATIENT BECAUSE GOOD THINGS COME TO THOSE WHO WAIT. TEACHING THEM TO USE THEIR HANDS AND TO BE CREATIVE AND NOT TO THINK OF BEING EMPLOYED BUT INSTEAD EMPLOYING THEMSELVES. REMAINING FOCUSED IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE THEIR GOALS AND MAKING THINGS HAPPEN AND NOT WAITING FOR THINGS TO HAPPEN BY THEMSELVES, SO IN THIS WAY WE HOPE EVERYONE WILL HAVE ACCESS TO CLEAN WATER AND DECENT SHELTER. AND IN THAT WAY WE HOPE WE ARE GOING TO FIGHT POVERTY AND HAVE CRIME FREE COMMUNITIES.

OUR PRODUCT IS GOING TO BE A SCULPTURE MADE OUT OF STONE (SPRING STONE), IT'S CALLED THE BIG FIVE, (EDUCATION OF THE SENSES). IT'S THE INSPIRATION I GOT AFTER I RECEIVED THE STOOLS FROM YOU.

SO FAR WE HAVE A GROUP OF (30) THIRTY STUDENTS IN OUR PROJECT. THEY ARE ALL VERY PASSIONATE ABOUT ART. THEY ARE VERY EAGER TO LEARN THE IMPORTANCE OF ART. OUR WORK IS BEING MADE EASIER BY THE SUPPORT WE ARE HAVING FROM THE COMMUNITY AROUND. APART FROM OUR {30} THIRTY REGULAR STUDENTS, WE ALSO HAVE OTHER STUDENTS WHO COME FROM TIME TO TIME, ALTHOUGH THEY DON'T COME ON REGULAR BASIS, THEIR REASONS BEING, SOME OF THEM ARE STILL GOING SCHOOL AND COLLEGES. WE DIDN'T HAVE A LOT OF DIFFICULTIES IN GETTING OUR PROJECT MOVING, BECAUSE WE HAVE AN ORGANISATION WHICH IS ALREADY OPERATING.

I SALUTE YOU ALL IN THE NAME OF ART"

Hi beautiful friend - wearing the necklace you made and feeling so happy for our connection. I finally saw some new photos and your finished works in Charleston were impressive. I will never be able to comprehend how you do what you do, and that is something I treasure, knowing someone who works in such a different way, and having had the opportunity to be present together for a moment.

Thank you, Phinias. And please pass my greetings back to your family and friends! How are your wife and daughters? Are they still interested in their dolls from South Carolina? I too hope that Mugabe will do the right thing and put himself second to the people right now. Enjoy the season and happy New Year.
Peace, Ruby

Hi Phinias,
Nothing much happening here either. I have some part-time work for the month and I'm trying to make another little book of drawings and maybe some paintings. I am concerned about what is going on in Zimbabwe, and I assume you are very worried. Is your family okay? I will be thinking of you and your loved ones.
Best, Ruby

Hi Phinias, yes! wonderful about Barack Obama, I am trying to stay optimistic about him, but he might make some poor choices for his cabinet which is really unfortunate. What have you been up to?

Hi Phinias,
Nice to hear from you- and yes, I understand why you might be cautious after what happened with Rajni. I am doing well, about to go to the state of Indiana and volunteer for Barack Obama. How are you and your family? Is it good to be home? I enjoyed our time together too, especially driving around, getting us lost! Be well,
Peace,
Ruby

Phinias, It was great to get to meet you and to see everything that you are doing. I think your work with the kids left a great impact in the community here and I can only assume it is doing the same thing in South Africa. I hope you enjoyed your stay in Charleston and took only fond memories and good impressions back with you (but if not, I hope you don't talk too badly about us Americans haha!)

Phinias - how's it going? Are you still in Charleston? When do you go back? Please make sure you post some images of your final works you made after we all left, I'd love to see. I'm so glad we met and only sad I didn't buy some more necklaces to bring for my friends and family. Next time! much love, rajni.x.

Hi Phinias! I am Gwylene’s assistant for the Future is on the Table. I really enjoy all of the pictures you have uploaded, as your work looks so vibrant and colorful. I cannot wait to see the sculpture you create for the show.

I am writing to see if you have a recipe for an appetizer, dessert, or soup that you could send us for the International dinner we are organizing. Many of us have never been to South Africa so please pick something you feel represents your cultures palate.
Thanks, see you soon!

To all of you in Capetown, I really enjoy looking at the paintings and seeing picture of the whole group. Only Phinias is coming to Charleston, but he must be the messenger as well of you all. Can we put some of those pictures in the show? This will help all of us to understand your "world" and may be better communicate. Gwylene

As you know, your residency in Charleston will be bringing you in two very different environments: the Gibbes Museum of Art and the Fraser Elementary School. Those two settings should allow you to come back home with more questions about the US than what you may feel you know now.
Also I wanted to let you know that, If you wish, people from your group may participate with you on the website.
